A lens aims the instrument at one kind of writing and owns everything specific to that domain. Rising Compass is the lens for song lyrics. Other lenses read scripts, essays, articles, and messages. One instrument, many lenses.

The standard the instrument measures against is a public constitution: universal tenets, amended in the open through a motion and deliberation process. The public writes the law. The instrument only applies it.

What gets done with the readings: making the unseen charge of culture visible, and the slow work of pointing it somewhere better. The founder's point of view lives here, in the building and the aim, never inside the verdict and never inside the law.
